In Module 1, I will introduce you to the common benchtop autoclave (steam steriliser) found in dental practices, how it works, the different types of autoclaves, simple maintenance tips for staff and regulations that apply to autoclaves.

Lesson Plan:

Lesson 1 - Introduction to Autoclave (15 min)

• Gain an understanding the moist heat (steam) is the most practical way to kill microbes
• Learn how a pressure cooker is similar to a steam steriliser's basic function
• Understand how moist heat (steam) kills microbes.

 Lesson 2 - Autoclave Types (20 min)

• Learn about the 3 different types of steam sterilisers: Types N, S and B
• Learn about the 3 types of load items: hollow, solid and porous
• Learn to match dental instruments to the right steam steriliser type.

 Lesson 3 - Autoclave Maintenance (10 min)

• Identify 5 maintenance procedures for a steam steriliser (regardless of the brand)
• Explain the importance of regular maintenance
• Discuss the consequences of not maintaining a steam steriliser.

Lesson 3 - Autoclave Regulations (5 min)

• Understand when buying a new or second hand steam steriliser, ensure it is TGA approved and has a Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods certificate.
